Christmas Trees are placed in the orange container for further disposal in Warsaw Poland Europe
12–18 minutes

Christmas Trees disposal rules for 30 countries for 2024-2025 are collected in this blog post. Local municipalities’ open sources are used and links are attached for your convenience.

Every year 60 million natural or so-called “real” Christmas Trees are purchased in Europe. It means that at least every 7th EU citizen purchases this evergreen Winter symbol to their home. But what to do with all these trees after holidays? How to utilise Christmas tree: maybe recycle or compost? Can you just throw it in the general waste?

Every 7th EU citizen purchases Christmas Tree

If you have own garden, then you have a plenty of options:
1) Replant the tree (of course, if you purchased a potted tree);
2) Use the tree as a mulch for your plants;
3) Add some needles to your composting bin.

These are all good options, but what to do with Christmas Tree if you’re living in the big city and do not have a garden, but want to dispose it in a sustainable way and according to legislation? (yes, there can be some fines for improper utilisation)

In this blog post I’ve collected information about Christmas Trees collection points in EU capitals plus added some more cities outside European Union, like UK, Ukraine and some others. It’s totally a volunteer project for me, the best way to support me will be to follow me on my social media (Instagram and YouTube).

IMPORTANT: There are some general Christmas trees disposal rules, applicable for all countries.
🚩 Ensure your Christmas Tree has no decorations or tree stand attached to it before the disposal.
🚩Christmas tree must not be wrapped in plastic, textile or any other material.
🚩Make sure that you’ve removed the string lights from the tree (if you need to dispose them too, follow e-waste guides).
🚩 Do not leave trees in forests or parks – as it can be harmful for the wildlife.
